Visiting the dentist can be nerve-wracking, whether it be for a cleaning, X-rays, a filling, or an implant. For those of you who are anxious about dental visits or suffer from dental phobia, don’t miss out on treatment! Here at Wright Implants we are all about your comfort. That’s why we offer three types of dental sedation: nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation.
A safe and effective sedation technique, nitrous oxide does not involve taking a pill or getting an injection. A mixture of oxygen and a sedative agent, it is inhaled through a small face mask. Often referred to as “laughing gas,” it provides a euphoric feeling while keeping you calm and comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide begin immediately upon breathing it in, and wear off soon after the mask is removed.
Oral sedation is usually taken in pill form, although it can also be administered as a liquid. It is usually taken about an hour before the procedure, but if you are particularly anxious, your doctor may recommend taking one the night before, as well. In most cases, depending on the dosage, patients will remain awake, but feel relaxed, calm, and groggy. You will need to make arrangements for someone to drive you to and from your appointment.
IV sedation is the most potent form, and is delivered intravenously. Because of this, a trained anesthesiologist will constantly monitor your sedation levels and your vital signs. Dr. Wright will carefully review your dental and medical history, and any existing conditions, to make sure IV sedation is right for you.
