Placing An Implant: Visit #2

In our last blog, we discussed the first step to placing a dental implant. After the implant is placed it usually takes up to four months, but it can be as long as six, for it to fuse with the bone and be ready for the next procedure. Today we will explain what you can expect during visit #2.

Visit #2

After the implant has osseointegrated (permanently fused) with the surrounding bone it is time to place the implant abutment. This requires a very minor surgery. First, you will be given a local anesthesia. After it takes effect, your dentist will make a small cut in your gum to expose the implant. The protective screw, or healing cap, that was screwed onto the implant at the time of placement will be removed and replaced with an implant abutment. The abutment is a small post which the final restoration will be adhered to. The abutment is screwed into the implant post and the final dental crown, bridge, or denture is cemented over the abutment.

Implant Success

Implant treatments have an over 90 percent success rate. This is owed to the process of osseointegration, the physical fusing of the jawbone with the titanium implant post. This makes the post a permanent part of your oral anatomy, and also provides the same strength and stability as your natural teeth. Dental implants are also the only treatment that reestablishes your tooth root which stimulates the flow of nutrient-rich blood to your jawbone keeping it strong and healthy.
