Placing An Implant: Visit #1

implant postIt usually takes two visits to place an implant, although some implants can be placed all in one day. The first visit consists of placing the implant post which is a surgical procedure. While you would think that placing an implant would be a lengthy procedure, it often can be done in under an hour.  In today’s blog, we will discuss the process of placing the implant post during visit #1.

What is an Implant?

An implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed into your jawbone. The titanium is biocompatible with human bone which means they grow together and become one. That is why implants are so successful, boasting over a 95 percent success rate.

The Procedure

X-rays will be taken beforehand to determine the exact area in the jawbone for implant placement. Before the procedure, you will be given both antibiotics to protect against infection, and pain medicine to make you comfortable, including local anesthesia and sedation if you prefer.

Next, the surgeon will make an incision in your gum to access the jawbone. Due to the sedation and local anesthesia you will not feel it when he or she establishes the hole into which the implant will be placed. Your gum will then be sealed over the implant and allowed to heal for 3 to 4 months so the bone and implant can complete osseointegration.

If the implant is an anterior tooth, you will be given a temporary prosthetic so you won’t have a space when you smile. Also, following the surgery you will be given more antibiotics and pain medicine along with instructions to follow while healing.
